Natural liquid product obtained by processing (dry distillation) wood. In Russia, the main raw material for this product is birch wood.
Externally, birch tar is a viscous, thick oily liquid of dark, brownish - black color with a pungent specific odor.
The method of obtaining is based on dry distillation of birch bark. Under the influence of high temperature, as well as in the absence of oxygen, wood is destroyed, as a result of which complex chemical compounds are split into simpler components and are released in the form of a resinous viscous liquid. Then the tar is subjected to fractional distillation to separate low - and high - boiling fractions. The low boiling fraction is the tar that can be used for medical purposes, and the high boiling resin fraction is a technical material that has wide application in industry.
The composition of birch tar is extremely rich. It contains a huge amount of nutrients. The most useful and active ones can be distinguished:
- salicylic acid;
- essential oils;
Also, this product contains a small amount of carcinogens. Unfortunately, the removal of these substances from the composition will lead to the loss of all the therapeutic properties of this natural remedy.
It is used in medicine.
Storage conditions and shelf life
No special conditions are required for storing tar, except that the storage place should be dark. The shelf life of pure birch tar is approximately 5 years.
